Nevermind Spin, you just ripped off my idea!

August 2nd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

I have to thank John aka xcitor from the Talking Metal Forums, Twitter, etc. for the heads up. Spin magazine has just decided to bring together a bunch of artits to discuss Nirvana’s Nevermind, you know in the way that I’ve been doing the last few months on my site Mars Attacks Radio discussing albums like Metallica’s And Justice For All, Prong’s Cleansing, and in the next few weeks Queens Of The Stone Age’s Songs For The Deaf. Great to see a big magazine like that can come along and basically take an idea I’ve been working on for the past 6 months and basically just rip it off. Am I saying the idea is 100%? Probably not, but just sucks when your fighting tooth and nail to get some of the same artists to comment, spend weeks after someone, and you receive notification saying we’re passing, you’re just not big enough to interview our artist. Seeing that some of these same artists are doing what I requested with someone else is annoying.

Here’s the link to the blabbermouth story on what Spin is ripping off.

What courtesy?

One thing I’ve come to hate when trying to secure guest for my podcasts/radio shows is the lack of professionalism with some musicians, their PR people or label. Would it kill some of these people to respond something to the effect of “got your e-mail, sorry I’m not interested” or “so and so is on the road, hit us up in a few months?” Maybe I’m just used to doing business in a different way, and making sure I cover all bases, cause you never know! Sure I understand that I’m small potatoes, and that they probably receive thousands of requests a day, but I don’t know, just a bit annoying being left out in limbo like that. A lot of times the artist have no clue that you’ve tried reaching out to them in the past. Their label or PR person “shields” them, and only sends a long what they want. I’ve been turned down plenty of times being told that unless I can guarantee “national exposure” that there was no way in hell that I would have access to someone. Since no one is selling a whole lot of albums these days, wouldn’t you want to take care of, or at least be cordial with those that are spending their money to promote you on their shows?

This is probably one of the reasons why other industries are still thriving, and the music industry is not.

Wrestlezone posts story after all

June 16th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

So Justin LaBar has come through, and actually posted the Big Show video on Wrestlezone. The odd thing here is that Big Show had the tittle over the weekend, but they mentioned that Wade Barrett was still IC champ this past Monday on Raw. That said, they never showed Barrett with the title…or Big Show for that matter. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

On a side note Josh Isenberg made a comment towards Justin regarding how TNA is offered in Canada, and how it would differ from the states. For those of you that don’t know, there are licensing, and distribution rights per country, all around the world. So Justin was right when it came to how TNA is offered in Canada, and that the process for someone to be reimbursed would be different in the Great White North. As a matter of a fact, there are different rights in the US depending upon your city, cable or satellite provider. You can have certain shows syndicated say on WTBS which is a national cable station, but you can have the same shows syndicated locally on an affiliate. Case in point, Seinfeld. The show is available across the US on TBS, but is also available in New York City on their Fox affiliate, channel 5.

I’m not saying I’m the smartest guy around, but Josh more than often tries to play the part, when to quote The Bloodhound Gang, he isn’t even the smartest peanut in the turd!

Wrestlezone, the WWE is misleading? What about you?

June 14th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Wrestlezone who makes their bread and butter from spreading wrestling rumors, lies if you will, has posted how “an inside source in the tv industry” disproved a statement WWE posted on Raw regarding last week’s viewership. Seriously you’re going to point that out when for I don’t know how long they’ve posted how the brand extension is about to end. They’re going to unify this title in the coming months. Check out this former diva in a hot outfit. What does this former diva look like now? Etc.

Last week they advertised former diva in a see through dress. Right, portions of midriff were see-through, big deal! Wow talk about miss leading! Yesterday we had a post about former diva Tori, and how she has been away for close to ten years, let’s see if she’s still just as hot. So to prep this they have her in lingerie from back in her WWE days, and then a Flashdance like silhouette with a question mark over it. Only to be taken to a picture of her that might as well been Tori inside of a cardboard box with her head sticking out. So they’re talking about the WWE being misleading, but yet they’re being hypocritical. Please the next time you post “hot picture” of so and so, it better be in something skimpy, a bikini or even soft porn! Seriously, who are they marking to 7 year old John Cena fans?

They also have a section where you can send them news. So I sent them news that Big Show appeared this past weekend with the intercontinental title in Spain. I sent the following YouTube video where he is clearly seen with the belt. And as they’ve done in the past, they haven’t had the sack to post it. Show doesn’t appear with the belt until the last minute or so of the video.

For those of you keeping score Martyn Nolan and I have been doing PPV lead in and recap shows. I have sent links to these shows to WZ, but instead of thinking, “hey this could help widen our audience” the stance has been to see these shows as competition. They have done the same with Bobby Bamber and his podcast. Both Bamber and Nolan write for the site. So it’s ok for them to write for WZ but not promote any of their podcasts. I guess that show of theirs, which has been put on hiatus how many times, has really been pulling in listeners. See I could have promoted the return of their shows with what I do, who knows maybe a listener or two would jump over. But hey why would the competition do that, or even mention their show their web site?

Onto Chair Shot Reality a show that is featured on WZ. I am going to admit that I watch every show they’ve released, and although Justin LaBar had some kind words for me in an e-mail, Josh Isenberg has been far from nice. A few months back they had said they were looking for a place to do a radio show online, or terrestrial. So I contacted them, and Mr. Isenberg gave me his personal e-mail to further the discussion. I was honest to them, and told them there was no money in either of the things they wanted to do, but that since I help program a web station (MarkStriglRadio.com), I could talk to the owners and see if they were interested in having a wrestling show on the station. Let me say that in some circles in radio there is money, but in most cases “big name” hosts don’t only do radio, they do voice over work, or do appearances, DJ at bars, etc. I mentioned all of this to them, but heard nothing back from either Justin or Josh. The professional thing to do would have been, “thanks for the info, but we’re not interested in your proposal” or “go f yourself”, respond in some manner, that would have been professional. So a few weeks later there was a technical glitch with Chair Shot Reality, so I wrote the show’s e-mail along with Josh’s, thinking he might be concerned that there was an issue with his show. I instead received an e-mail asking me to no longer e-mail him, and to only e-mail the show e-mail from now on. For a pair that is professing themselves to be the most watched internet wrestling show, they sure as hell don’t care about the production value of the show. Again, the professional thing would have been, thanks for the info, I’ll let our team know. But the audio at times is over powering to the extent to where you can’t hear them speak, which was what I was alerting them to. The colors are almost never balanced, to the extent that Justin looks to have Michael Hogan type baldness, and Josh’s face usually looks tomato red. They also made a claim that they get as many views as Zack Ryder does, guys YouTube has a viewer count, if your preshow get’s as many views as the other two parts of your show, either I’m watching the shows when they first come out, or the numbers aren’t even close.

Most of these wrestling sites are a crap shoot; they have as much insight as the rest of us watching at home. That said, I will still go to Wrestlezone, and recommend others do so as well. I also recommend checking out Chair Shot Reality, because it is still very entertaining. But please before criticizing someone for something, you should really look into what you’re doing first.

What’s Next?

May 2nd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Being an American living abroad, I am not looking forward to what’s next. For those of you that don’t know, I was present on September 11th, 2001. I witnessed, along side of my brother the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. I have always made it clear that I was about 100 yards away when the second plane impacted, I was lucky to be where I was, and not any closer. I also did not lose anyone I knew, nor witnessed anyone jumping (thank God). Although I knew this day would come, you don’t know how to feel, or how to react when it does.

My wife woke me up to give me the news that he had been killed, I got up shortly after to see Spanish TV showing pictures of his dead body. CNN is reporting that they have since buried him at sea.

While people are celebrating, will Al Qaeda be moving forward with their supposed plan to do something catastrophic throughout the world? What impact will this have on people like me living outside of the US? I’m sure an answer won’t come today, or tomorrow, but it is coming.

So while many rejoice, it will not bring any of the people that died on 9/11. It may also unchain an ugly chapter in the history of humanity. I hope I’m wrong, but let’s be cautious, and wise moving forward.

Make no mistake about it, there is a large Anti-American sentiment outside of the US. For those ignorant enough to say “well he only killed 3,000 Americans”, realize that Al Qaeda was either behind or fueled attacks in Madrid, and London among other places. It is also easy for people to make the mistake of not realizing that those that died where innocent people, working class people, people like you and me, and they are often forgotten once we focus on the political implications.

Godspeed to us all.

Lazarus A.D. Need Your Help

March 16th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

LAZARUS A.D. is the most recent casualty in a slew of unfortunate band robberies to claim theft of their personal items and money from their touring van. The incident took place last night in Southampton, UK. After breaking a window to enter the band’s van, the burglars stole roughly $1,500 in cash, all of the bands personal items including Social Security cards, birth certificates, and clothing, and even their personal hygiene items. The band members luckily had their passports in their pockets and their gear inside the venue; otherwise they fear that those items would have been taken as well.

LAZARUS A.D. have many dates remaining on their tour with Bonded By Blood, so having no money or personal items will be a great strain on the band financially and personally. A PayPal donation link has been set up in order for fans to donate to the band in this time of need. Please head to this link to donate what you can spare.

Thank You

February 23rd, 2011 § 2 Comments

Just finished watching The Pacific, I can’t image what these soldiers went through. A lot of people have mentioned over the years how difficult it must have been to witness 9/11 from so close (@100 yrds). I can’t imagine what they endured day in, day out for years until the end of the war, and how brutal it was after get got home. I dealt with survivor’s guilt for a few years, and still have thoughts go through my mind regarding what I saw. For example, just thinking about how lucky my brother and I were to not be any closer (like we were supposed to be). How many people I witnessed that potentially died, firemen, policemen, and of course the people in the planes. For years it was how come I lived and they didn’t, what made me special? A lot of those people had kids, I didn’t, why did they have to die?

Since moving over to Spain I have read up and watch various documentaries on World War II, the U.S. Civil War, as well as series like Band Of Brothers and The Pacific. I can’t help but think how lucky we are to not have to deal with the same things they did. And again, as mentioned above, how difficult it must have been to be involved any of these aforementioned wars, or any other for that matter. What the human toll is, not only the lives that are lost, but the soldiers that return wounded, both physically and mentally. I can’t help but feel sadness for them (having dealt with what a tenth of the survivor’s guilt most of them probably endured, and are enduring. I can’t even fathom what an emotional toll they paid on the battlefield, and when they got home.

The first person I ever saw thank a soldier was my friend John Z, known to some of you as Zman in the Talking Metal Forums. We (my wife and I) met up with him and his wife Julie in San Francisco, while we were on our honeymoon. While in the hotel elevator, a WWII vet got on the elevator, and John shook his hand and thanked him.

I have had family members fight in Afghanistan, and Iraq (cousins Michael and Victor), and know of someone that died while serving as well. Sgt. Ryan Doltz (http://www.rememberingryan.org/), I proudly wear his memorial t-shirt, and visited his grave in Arlington Cemetery a few years back.

I truly feel grateful for what they have and are still doing for us, and can’t help but feel a little selfish when bitching about nonsense. Considering everything they had to deal with.
